Join Us At The Mall Saturday For Broome County Safety Day!

We'll be in the Oakdale Mall parking lot all day this Saturday June 9th with all sorts of fun ways to learn about fire safety! Bring the kids to see the fire trucks and enjoy free sand art. We'll also be giving away t-shirts, tickets to the Greater Binghamton Air Show, and plenty of other prizes throughout the day.

We're working to raise money for a new tow vehicle to pull the Broome County Firefighters' Association Kid's Safety House.

The Fire Safety Trailer is owned by the Broome County Firefighters Association and is used to teach fire prevention to children. The trailer is arranged to look like a small home with a living room, kitchen and bedroom and features a number of "hazards" which are used to discuss fire safety with children. They are also taught how and when to dial "911" to report an emergency.

One of the important teaching points of the trailer is to teach children what to do if they should be awakened by the smoke alarm and find their house filled with smoke. Home exit drills (EDITH) are discussed with the children and they are then given the opportunity to do a practice home fire drill in the trailer. The trailer is filled with non-toxic "smoke" (theatrical fog similar to what is used at concerts & plays) to simulate a smoky fire condition. Children are then taught to crawl low to avoid the smoke and to escape from the "house". They climb down a ladder at the back of the trailer to simulate their escape from a fire in their home.

The fire safety trailer has been at a number of events around Broome County - Carousel Festival in Endicott, Kirkwood Town Fair, Johnson City Field Days, Conklin Field Days, Endwell Fire's Ice Cream Social, Vestal Fire Open House (held in conjunction with Target), Town of Union Safety Town, and dozens of schools and fire stations for school presentations, as well as other events.

We'll see you Saturday, June 9th at the Oakdale Mall!
