Binghamton and the Southern Tier are preparing for the significant winter storm that is expected to hit the region this weekend. According to the National Weather Service, the storm is anticipated to bring between 12 and 18 inches of snow starting late Saturday (January 24) and continuing through Sunday (January 25). NWS meteorologist Kaitlyn Lardeo warns that the storm could be the most severe in recent years, with wind chills dropping to negative 10 to negative 15 degrees Friday into Saturday.

The New York State Department of Transportation is advising residents to avoid unnecessary travel during the storm. Regional Director Andrew Stiles emphasized the importance of staying home, stating, "If you can stay home, that’s the safest place to be." Plows will be working around the clock to clear roads, but drivers are urged to remain patient and give plows space to operate safely.

In response to the impending storm, the Broome County Office of Emergency Services is offering free transportation to warming centers and emergency shelters through Monday. The office advises residents to take precautions against the extreme cold, including wearing layers and avoiding the use of open flames to thaw frozen pipes. The Broome County Sheriff’s Office will conduct wellness checks to ensure community safety.

The storm is expected to bring heavy snowfall rates of one to two inches per hour on Sunday, with the bulk of the snow falling between 7 a.m. Sunday and 7 a.m. Monday. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning effective from 1 a.m. Sunday to 7 p.m. Monday. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to stay safe during this severe weather event.
