The Disneyland Resort in California is officially closing from this Saturday, March 13th through at least the end of the month. According to Cnet, Disney parks in Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Shanghai are also closed for the time being.

Both Disneyland Park and Disney's California Adventure will remain operating over the next day to allow guests time to alter their travel plans, though the Downtown Disney shopping distrivt is reportedly remaining open. Disney's decision to close its park came following heated online criticism for continuing to operate normally as the Coronavirus news came out. That criticism intensified as the park stayed open immediately after California Governor Gavin Newsome called for the cancellation of all gatherings of 250 people or more. The decision to close came within hours of the governor's request.

Disney's closure news comes after news of a string of massive closures and cancellations. Those include the following:

  • Suspension of all Broadway shows and gatherings of 500 or more in New York
  • Cancellation of the men's and women's NCAA tournament
  • Suspension of the NHL season
  • Suspension of the AHL season
  • Cancellation of MLB Spring Training and delay of the MLB season
  • Suspension of all Live Nation tours including Post Malone and Billie Eilish
